T/S Elmer R. Hammond t/s Elmer Hammond

Was born December 6th 1923.

Killed in the line of duty January 5th 1945

Mother: Abbie Hammond, Charter Member American Legion Auxiliary and was a member for 71 years.

BROTHER:  SAMUEL G. HAMMOND. Continuous Member Post 226 Hanson, MA.        

Prior to his service, T/SGT Elmer R. Hammond served as Commander of The Sons of American Legion, Squadron 226, Hanson, MA. During his service to his Nation, T/SGT Elmer R. Hammond flew with the Eighth United Sates Army Air Force. He was a member of a flight crew aboard a squadron of B-17 bombers Hvy, his craft carried the nose art “BUMBLE BEE”; which in all likelihood was created by Walt Disney which was often the case at the time. His death occurred after his 40th mission, where he was reported as Killed in Action, over Europe.



T/S Hammond was killed flying with the 849th Army Air Force Bomb Squadron, He had 40 missions before he died.
